We are looking for a Principal Climate Change Officer to drive forward Merton's Climate Change Strategy and develop complementary sustainability initiatives. Merton has a well-earned reputation as being at the forefront of climate change policy and practice - mainstreaming local solutions into national policy and guidance.
The Merton Rule demonstrates our commitment to combating climate change, within and outside the Council. We need to develop our capacity for further work in this area and wish to appoint a well-rounded and experienced environmentalist to lead on a varied portfolio of projects.
You will be responsible to taking forward the Climate Change Strategy and leading on the development and implementation of spatial planning policy for sustainable development.
You will contribute to local regeneration projects, develop area based energy schemes and lead on Borough wide energy efficiency initiatives. A key part of your role will be engaging with key stakeholders, ensuring community buy-in to Council led initiatives.
A thorough knowledge and understanding of climate change issues, policy and practice is required particularly in the area of renewable energy solutions for built environment. You must be able to demonstrate an understanding of emerging technologies and their application to tacking local climate change issues - including energy generation and waste disposal
An ability to work independently is essential, but you will also be expected to engage with other senior officers and work across traditional departmental and corporate boundaries. You will therefore need to be skilled in project management; have good oral, written and presentational skills; be well organised; and have well developed ICT skills.
You will need to be educated to degree level in this field, with proven experience of working in and leading multi-disciplinary teams.
