Brief Description The Department for Transport is looking for a good writer to join the Department’s Internal Communications team to write and edit our monthly ezine for staff and to contribute to other corporate publications. You will need a lively writing style, a good eye for design and the ability to establish rapport with people at all levels in the organisation. The Internal Communications team works within the Communication Directorate alongside Press Office, Marketing, Strategic Communications and Print Publishing colleagues. The team supports the Department’s objectives and management priorities using a range of internal media working closely with the Change Programme team. The post will be line managed by the Senior Communications Advisor and countersigning officer will be the Head of Internal Communications. The position is based in our central London office and in addition to the starting salary, there is also an attractive civil service pension scheme, 30 days’ annual leave (pro rata), 41-hour week (including one hour lunch breaks) and other benefits. Vacancy description Researching, writing and producing our monthly staff ezine, a2c, to help keep staff informed and to support our corporate change and employee engagement programme. Contributing on a rota basis to our plasma news screens, creating screen messages with good visuals and short punchy copy. Training on the technology will be provided. Contributing to development of our intranet news pages. Helping to edit and proof read corporate publications including our Departmental Annual Report. Skills 1. Able to write well, turning jargon into plain English and telling a story in a lively and interesting way. (GCN drafting, layout and design: produces clear, persuasive and accessible communication products.) 2 Negotiation skills and the ability to get on with people at all levels (People Management - GCN relationship and account management) 3 Attention to detail and accurate proof reading. Experience of producing effective newsletters and magazines, electronically and in print. (GCN drafting, layout and design) 4 Understands the principles of internal communication and employee engagement (GCN Strategic marketing and communications). Desirable criteria 1. Able to gather and interpret data on the effectiveness of communication and identify opportunities for improvement. (Analysis and Use of Evidence - GCN evaluation, research and evidence) 2. Experience of using Quark Xpress to create publications would be useful, but training will be provided.
