The Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) civilian technician apprenticeship is a challenging and rewarding scheme aimed at developing highly competent engineering managers. You will join an open, flexible and supportive environment - one that gives you the freedom to acquire multiple skills, the chance to gain experience across a wide range of activities and be exposed to state of the art technologies. We can offer you education and work experience while being paid. Your learning will be a mixture of on-the job training, working alongside experienced project engineers, and classroom study at college. In addition, you will have the opportunity to visit military sites throughout the UK and potentially abroad, participate in Adventure Training and gain experience of working on a wide range of defence projects. The apprenticeship will be based in Bristol but during the second and third years apprentices will be required to complete at least one training placement at another UK location. Travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with normal department policy for detached duty. The apprenticeship is scheduled to last 36 months and will enable you to acquire skills and qualifications that are highly sought after. This will include completion of an HNC in engineering and you will also work towards an engineering management Level 3 NVQ. This apprenticeship scheme may also offer the potential for you to specialise in one of the following disciplines: 1. Mechatronics 2. Electronic 3. Mechanical In all cases the focus will be on the theoretical side of engineering. The roles are not hands-on or highly practical but the aim is to prepare you for future employment as an office based engineering manager. But if you are interested in how things are designed, how they work as a whole and wish to develop your analytical skills then this could be the scheme for you. Successful completion of this apprenticeship should lead to employment in an engineering management role, on a starting salary of approx £23K. Although the majority of apprentices would be expected to find roles within Abbey Wood on completion it is also possible that roles may be offered at Waddington, Yeovil or on the Clyde.You will then have access to a diverse range of job roles supporting cutting edge military equipment, including everything from ships, aircraft, vehicles and weapons to information systems and satellite communications. So whether you will be involved in developing a new capability for the Forces of the future or supporting current operational activities you will contribute to defence projects of real significance and consequence.
