Salary: Contract for Services £20,000 p.a. (for approximately 3 days per month) Contract for Services post at the Met Office, Exeter Background information The Met Office is already a globally recognised player in pioneering research into climate change, delivering a range of weather forecasting products and services to public and private sector customers. We aim to consolidate our position to be recognised as the best weather and climate service in the world. To do this we need to achieve and maintain excellence across all our organisational activities, from attracting and retaining the best talent to the effective management of business risks and the application of best-practice governance principles. The Met Office Board, through which the Met Office Executive reports, plays a pivotal role in monitoring, scrutinising and constructively challenging where appropriate to ensure delivery of commercial and operational goals balanced against demonstrating the highest levels of integrity. As a Non-Executive Director, you will have a key part in shaping how we operate, both now and into the future. You will provide professional expertise; ensuring appropriate strategic planning and governance controls are in place, with a specific remit in relation to our finance and auditing arrangements. Specific job purpose Provide strategic advice and scrutiny of Executive activities supporting delivery of the Corporate Plan, through strategic planning and governance, to ensure the Met Office conducts its business and manages risk effectively. Specific job responsibilities - Contribute to the development and monitoring of strategic plans and objectives.
- Monitor the performance of the Executive Team in meeting agreed goals and targets, including the delivery of services, improvements and financial performance.
- Ensure that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust, and that the Board is kept fully informed through timely and relevant information.
- Ensure that the organisation values diversity in its workforce and demonstrates equality of opportunity in its treatment of staff, customers and in all aspects of its business.
- Support the development of an organisational culture which is in line with Met Office vision and values.
- Ensure effective corporate governance of the Met Office by serving on relevant sub-committees, in particular, the Audit Committee, and/or the Remuneration Committee.
Qualifications, skills and abilities required Essential - Demonstrable experience of successfully improving and managing organisational performance in a board level (or equivalent) position.
- Demonstrable experience of strategic planning, risk management and high-performance management.
- Financial knowledge and experience.
- Commercially and politically aware with the ability to understand and translate the impact of external and government factors in the context of the Met Office.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, with the ability to lead, influence, challenge and inspire.
Desirable - Previous experience as a non executive board member for a public sector organisation.
- Previous experience of chairing or sitting on an Audit Committee.
