The Dalton Research Institute Analytical Microscope (DRIAM) Facility at Manchester Metropolitan University is a state-of-the-art FEG-SEM (Zeiss Supra 40) with an extensive suite of analytical tools built into it. These include EDX, WDX, EBSD, micro-Raman spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence. The DRIAM is a variable pressure system, which also has the option of a liquid nitrogen cooled stage for use with, for example, biological samples. The instrument is capable of nanoscale resolution imaging, surface mapping and material characterisation and serves as a major analytical tool for several research groups at MMU and for external academic and industrial clients. The unique nature of the DRIAM has been recognised by the EPSRC by their inclusion of it in their 'Materials and Nanotechnology Research Equipment' programme, which partly funds this post. We require a specialist research associate with a background in electron microscopy and surface and bulk analytical techniques, such as those listed above, to help operate the DRIAM facility and expand its usage. You will already have skills in these techniques and the relevant sample preparation processes. You will be capable of interpreting data and results arising from specimen analysis. You will be able to convey complex information and results orally and in written reports to a variety of audiences including academic staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students and external industrial clients. All applicants should have a PhD in materials, chemistry or physics (or a closely related subject), or relevant professional qualifications with substantial experience of research. Additionally, applicants require good communications skills, a strong theoretical background in an area relevant to this post, combined with a practical approach to analysis, and the ability to work effectively as part of a small team.
