The senior press officer will pay an integral role in managing HSE’s engagement with the media. Responsible for a team of three press officers, the post-holder will be expected to develop, lead and manage staff in providing an effective media relations service on behalf of HSE. The role involves extensive liaison with officials throughout HSE and the post holder will need to be comfortable working with staff at all levels as well as engaging senior journalists and broadcasters. The post is one of two senior press or public relations officers in the external communications team and will report directly to the Senior PR and Media Manager. About the roleKey responsibilities:- Protecting and enhancing the reputation of HSE with external audiences.
- Managing a rota to ensure staffing levels across press team are appropriate and reasonable to cover office hours and out-of-hours service.
- Giving appropriate direction and guidance to press officers to provide an efficient and effective reactive media relations service.
- Managing staff performance in conjunction with Senior Media and PR Manager based upon corporate and divisional priorities.
- Assisting in the development of effective information management protocols and guidance for press office staff.
- Working with HSE colleagues to ensure external communication meets strategic objectives for HSE and Communications Directorate.
- Reporting on Press Office activity to Senior Head of Media and PR and contributing to strategic Communications Plans.
- Building relationships and engagement with key trade and national journalists.
- Promoting values and developing relationships and cross working across Communications Directorate.
Management responsibilities:- Management of 3 Band 4 staff.
Person requirement- Relevant degree level education and / or post-graduate qualification.
- Experience of managing reactive communications in the public sector.
- Experience of managing staff.
- Good understanding of media and political news environment.
You must have:- Exemplary written and oral communication skills and also strong interpersonal skills.
- The ability to provide effective team management of staff.
- The ability to understand the political environment in which we operate and can prepare briefings for colleagues at senior levels in the organisation.
- The ability to identify media opportunities for the organisation. Strong focus on developing effective and efficient reactive service to meet needs of internal and external customers.
