The programme is a mixture of classroom based teaching, shadowing, secondments, written assignments and time spent in an establishment at both the Officer level and also as a Head of Function. All candidates have to pass a JSAC as part of the recruitment process, along with a series of psychometric and ability tests and interview. The SPMP has been designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and understanding they will need to operate as Senior Managers within the Prison Service. There will be scope for recognising individual learning needs through Personal Development, and sections of the course will be tailored accordingly. Module 1 – Prison Officer training and Officer Placement Module 2 – Operational Management Development Module 3 – Functional Head Placement Module 4 – Deputy Governor
It is expected that you have at least 4 years experience in a senior management position and successful people management across a range of experiences. These experiences should include: - People management

Following assessment and clearance, posts will be taken up in September 2010. Whilst on the Programme your salary will be within the Senior Operational Manager D pay range, which currently goes from £44,589 to £64,933. Depending upon your location, there may also be a local pay allowance of up to £4,250. HMPS/NOMS recognises the complementary skills and experience that candidates from other organisations can bring and the varying career levels from which these derive. As a reflection of this and the intensity of the Senior Prison Manager Programme, discretionary conversion allowances aligned to individual circumstances can be offered to applicants whose salary exceeds the current entry point to the course. Elements of such an allowance are conditional on course completion and retention. Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) All Prison Officers and those working in regulated activity will be subject to the provisions of the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006. This seeks to ensure those who are deemed unsuitable from working with children and vulnerable adults are prevented from working in particular work settings or undertaking work of a specified nature. Barred individuals who seek to undertake work with vulnerable groups will be subject to criminal penalties.
Annual Leave
Senior posts attract an annual leave allowance of 30 days on entry. On top of this you will also receive public and privilege holidays. Leave for part-time and job share posts will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.

Season ticket advance
After two months service you will be eligible to apply for a season ticket advance to purchase a quarterly, or longer period season ticket for travel between home and office.

The Prison Service offers a childcare vouchers scheme. The scheme enables staff to take part of their salary in the form of Childcare Vouchers. This is known as a Salary Sacrifice. The vouchers can then be used to help meet the costs of any form of registered or approved childcare for children aged 0 -16.
