General Overview: This position is responsible for designing and performing experiments in an R&D laboratory environment necessary to attain the objectives associated with projects leading to new sales, product improvements, and the resolution of any customer problems or complaints both domestically and in Latin America. Technical presentations to key customers in conjunction with the sales/marketing staff, and the presentation of technical papers to industry audiences will be required. Additionally, this position is accountable for coordinating and providing technical support to the Customer Service team, Key Account/Sales Manager teams and external customers. Liases with the Regional Marketing Team and acts as a bridge between marketing/sales, manufacturing, R&D and product regulatory affairs functions and external customers. Responsibility Primary Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Initiate and drive technical service projects related to the current customer base and target accounts. • Interface with Sales/ Marketing/ R&D providing technical support for lab projects and new products. • Primary contact for technical questions/issues from Sales, Marketing, Market Support Specialists and customers. • Focal point with the customer for technical information requests, questionnaires, specification changes, negotiate customer specifications between customer and Cellulosic Specialties. • Lead the technical efforts for resolution of customer problems. Custom formulation required to solve customers’ technical problems. • Maintain competitive product database. • Develop technical literature, training programs for internal and distributor use and for presentation to customers. • Maintain accurate and timely analysis reports including entering data in various computer programs. • Maintain laboratory equipment including preventative maintenance, routine maintenance, and calibration. • Use principles and tools to identify problem areas and areas for improvement. • Prepare reports on work completed (i.e. lab projects) and external customer visits. • Manage changes in lab processes and systems. Must be proficient in ISO 9000 procedures. • Maintain impeccable housekeeping standards. Inventory and requisition lab supplies, equipment and chemicals. Properly discard lab materials in accordance with generally accepted safety hygiene procedures. • Complete other projects as directed and all other tasks/duties as assigned or required. • Commitment to health, safety and protection of the environment and supports Akzo Nobel’s commitment to Responsible Care Job requirements / Candidate profile Qualifications: BS plus 5 years experience. Job experience working as a Coatings Chemist is mandatory. Proven ability to perform formulation chemistry and application and performance testing. Familiarity with coating manufacturing processes and operations in addition to knowledge of building products. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Incumbent must be motivated and must have the ability to accurately perform large number of tests in laboratory setting both internally and at customer facilities. Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is a plus but not mandatory. Computer skills: MS Office, Outlook, and Statistical programs. Job Type: Permanent Location: New York-Albany/Poughkeepsie
