The Maintenance function prevents failures on the infrastructure, ensuring nothing breaks down and the railway is 100% reliable. Infrastructure maintenance used to be dispersed among several companies until it was brought back in house in one of the biggest changes the rail industry has seen in decades. In addition to maintaining the track, signalling, electrification equipment, off track operational land and property, the Maintenance function manages on-track plant contracts, telecoms maintenance contracts and a large vehicle fleet. By use of the Element Manager interfaces, to bring under management the Alcatel (SDH & PDH) product range, integrating them into rings, and/or other configurations, as required. The work involves testing of alarm functionality, DCN systems, synchronisation, establishment of test circuits, and production of test certification documentation, resulting in a fully managed network being handed over into Network Rail in an operational state. To monitor the managed network, interfacing with Project staff, Alcatel, and maintenance contractors, as required, regarding the notification and clearance or observed or reported faults.
