The Communication and Public Engagement programme promotes engagement with the nature, discoveries and wonder of science and its implications for individuals and society. Programme staff work closely with Sanger Institute scientists to develop resources that will stimulate public interest in biomedical science and encourage informed discussions of relevant issues. These close collaborations also help to foster a community of scientists who can effectively engage with the public. In this part-time position, the web developer will work with scientists, educators, animators and other web developers/programmers to produce and publish on- and offline interactive resources about Sanger Institute research. This may involve applying a working knowledge of action script to Macromedia Flash animations, creating stand-alone programs for educational use or building accessible interfaces for existing research applications. Our major online platform is www.yourgenome.org. He/she will work within an existing web infrastructure to provide accessible applications and resources with coherent, logical structures and clear navigation. Essential Skills Computer Science/Biological degree or equivalent experience. Ability to work as a team player and interact with others effectively and professionally. Experience with LINUX/UNIX/Windows XP environments. Proficiency with XHTML, CSS, OO Javascript (JQuery library, Flowplayer tools), XML, XSLT, JSON, Ajax. Experience in version control (cvs). Ideal Skills Proficiency with Adobe Flash CS3/4 Professional. Actionscript v2 and v3; PERL Programming Language; MySQL & Relational Database Concepts. Experience of integrating Flash and other technologies. Eye for detail and web design; AdobeAIR Flex application programming. Other information This role will work on Communication and Public Engagement team projects and work closely with staff from that team but will be embedded within the Sanger Institute's webteam.
